In our culture, it is so difficult to remain pure. Sometimes, it feels like if you are a virgin, and you are trying to live your life in purity, you are alone—like one in a million. Have you felt this way before? Or, have you wondered why you should even bother with trying to be pure as it seems like no one else is doing the same?!
Whenever questions like this have crossed my mind, I have weighed them against other things that culture tells us in light of what God tells us, particularly through the Catholic Church. If you have noticed, culture really doesn’t have our best interest in mind. For example, we are often told—through magazines, movies, TV shows, advertisements—that the only way to make it in this world is to let greed drive your actions: strive to make the most money you can so you can have the best “toys,” forget about treating people with kindness because in the end “I” am the only one who truly matters, as long as I am “happy” what I’m doing must be right.
As you probably have experienced though, these are lies that society tries to sell to us, not with our best interest in mind, but out of selfishness. They are lying to us as well, when they tell us that it’s the “right” thing to do to express your “love” for someone through sexual intercourse outside of marriage, or that it only makes sense to live with your boyfriend or girlfriend before deciding to marry them or not in order to “try them out.”
On the other hand, in the light of truth, the Catholic Church teaches us that sex is something to be saved for marriage, and that it is sacred and beautiful within that context. It is even a foretaste of Heaven, but only if it’s done under the right circumstances. I personally want to experience sex this way, rather than with any feelings of guilt/shame/scandal, so I’ve decided to wait until marriage before I give myself to someone physically. There’s also something so beautiful about being able to tell your spouse one day, that you saved the gift of your sexuality only for him/her! Don’t you think so?!
Will you take just a little bit of time to watch this video about purity? I think it explains things a little better than I can, and I was really inspired by it, as I think you will be too!
I’m going to pray for you that you can be strong and commit/re-commit yourself to purity for the sake of yourself and your future spouse. And will you say a prayer for me as well?!
