One day last year I was at the froyo place by my house, and the owner behind the counter had started some small talk with me asking me where I went to school and what I was studying. I told her I was a Theology major and that I eventually want to be a youth minster. She then proceeded to tell me all about her history with the Catholic Church and why she left it. This happens way more frequently than you would think. She said she thought the Catholic Church portrayed God as a police officer waiting at the bottom of a hill trying to catch you while you’re speeding. I think that sometimes the Church can be inaccurately interpreted in this way.
I was watching The Office today and in the particular episode I was watching Dwight was singing a song that his parents taught him that goes like this: “Learn your rules you better learn your rules, if you don’t you’ll be eaten in your sleep NOM” I think that sometimes this is the way that people feel about church or even God. They think that the church is a set of rules that is only there to tell us what to do and to oppress us and that if you break these rules God is just waiting to catch you in sin and send you straight to hell.
Pope Francis says “The church is a love story not an institution”. More than anything God loves us, he gives us these guidelines in order to draw closer to him and more fully love him. When we become who God calls us to be, we are fully ourselves. When we live our lives with God and try to be the best versions of ourselves, our hope is to get to heaven and be with God, the creator, the one who loves us more than anyone else ever could for eternity. God doesn’t give us these guidelines to make us have less fun or catch us when we slip up. He gives us these guidelines so we can draw closer to him and eventually be united with him in heaven. God is Love.
